NPD Sales Results for December 2013 [Up2: Xbox One/360 HW, 3DS top system of year]

I thought the highest month was 460K not 472K?

460K would be very good for the Wii U, and also still bad in the grand scheme.

The highest month for Wii U is 463K (December 2012).

Mind you, any number under 500K is still bad.

The news that everybody's anticipating is how the Wii U fared this month.

To be clear:

Wii U sold 223K last month. It managed 463K last December, but that was because it was a launch month.

Nintendo's past Decembers with the Wii:

2006 - 604K
2007 - 1350K
2008 - 2150K
2009 - 3810K
2010 - 2355K
2011 - 1060K
2012 - 472K

Nintendo's past Decembers with the GameCube:

2001 - 573K
2002 - 590K
2003 - 1158K
2004 - 796K
2005 - 606K

Anything below 500K would be bad for the console.

Anything below 400K would be horrible for the console.

Anything below 300K...I don't want to even go there.

I hope no one gets convinced into thinking that 500K is a "good" number. It is good for the console's abysmal performance thus far, though.

lol?

What's the issue?

The first four are Xbox One and then anything that was in second place but still within the top 10 would have charted.

The PR doesn't say that, just that 6 of the Top 10 are on XBO, of which three of those are also on PS4. In fact you can deduce that the remaining 4 in the Top 10 are probably the other PS4/Wii U exclusives.
Look at the order of the platforms listed per game, that's also in order of best-selling.

Yeah, god forbid a company actually waits until a game is finished before it releases it. Mind you, i suppose gamers do reward EA every year for their half finished piles of garbage, so maybe it'd be good for business?
lmao

It didn't

France: 50k (in three weeks)
Germany: 100k
Spain: 28k

Then we have these two months NPD numbers (1817k) and UK (364k). We are only missing two bigger markets where Xbone was released (Australia and Italy) and those really can't make up the difference. NUmbers just don't add up.

This is bigger news if it's true. If they are not close to 3 million (say, 2.9 million at least), this would be the boldest lie they've made since the DRM debacle. I wish we had clearer numbers, because I thought there was no way they'd lie on something as visible as that...

If WiiU sells around 500k that would have to be considered as a massive win for Nintendo considering the console has been selling 30 - 50k per month in the US for most of 2013. I had a strong feeling it would struggle to hit 300k for some reason.

You do realize they could have started the game earlier/cut a bit of content/enlisted help/etc, right? It was a shortsighted move.

The last thing they need is another 8 month drought.

They could have saved 3D World until then, eh?

No kidding, I wouldn't be surprised if there was another $50 price cut or so before Smash Bros gets released

Considering Smash won't be out till next fall I would hope it wouldn't be 300 by then.

Just like in Japan, it's not a win if it collapses right back down to horrible numbers.

Nintendo is so incredibly stupid for not having Mario Kart in November.

I mean, they've botched this entire generation and it wouldn't have saved them, but it still would have moved more consoles.

I blame Nintendogs. =P

The MK team makes both Nintendogs and Mario Kart. Because Nintendo wanted to push Nintendogs out for 3ds launch, it pushed back MK7 to Holiday 2011, and also delayed work on MK8.

Just look at it. There's evil in their eyes.

I'm not actually serious about this.

Actually the North American market is the biggest and the most important. Getting a lead here should be the priority for any company.

Usually when people type actually, they actually make a counterpoint. Not make an inane statement that has nothing to do with a logical post (which seems to be what you did here).

Interesting. Not sure if Microsoft's strategy for over emphasis in usa will pay off in the long run but it seems to have for December.

I just want to plant my banner here and say that MajorNelson's twitter post is completely acceptable PR for me. And I was one of the posters last month who heavily criticized last month's magic math.

What's the issue?

I don't get it. If we drop the only game not available on next-gen (GTA5) that only allows one game to be promoted. How can 3 retail games fit into the list now?

This must be only about next-gen platform sales only, a metric we don't have access to.

It's got to have done pretty well in Canada. I completely forgot about Canada at first too. (sorry Canada!)

Interested to see if there was any Vita growth in December due to the PS4. Also obviously some solid Wii U and 3DS numbers will be appreciated along with the sales of PS4 and XB1 launch titles throughout the month of December.

I know it'll probably be a while before we get some creamsugar up in here so I'll probably just check tomorrow.

Hmmm... This was waste of time. I expected both ps4 and xbo to do over million. And ps4 still in lead means difference is smaller than I though or about same. Pretty lame numbers.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
>460k would give WiiU another edging out Dreamcast victory as with last months win. Doesn't make up for its September and October defeats by the swirly logo'd beast though. Seems to be hugging that trajectory quite a bit if you factor in a little industry growth along the way.

The Crimson Kid

what are you waiting for
I'm surprised that Microsoft couldn't manage to sell a million XB1's in Dec. with their huge ad blitz and it being in stock everywhere. I'm more surprised that the PS4 is still leading NA in sales because it seemed that the stock situation was really dire. Apparently it sold over 650k? I was expecting way worse.

It seems that Sony made the right move to expand into so many territories so quickly. In exchange for giving up some ground in the US, they started building the foundation for growth in dozens more countries than Microsoft will be in anytime soon, which is vital for strong demand worldwide.

The next few months will be interesting to see. How will Sony decide to allocate their units globally? How well will XB1 sell in Jan and Feb, and will Titanfall do much to boost demand for the console?

What comes from those months will determine a lot about what happens throughout the rest of the year.

Ha ha ha.. I'm still cracking up thinking back at some of the people taking pictures at the Targets they work at showing stacks of Xbox Ones in stock. All that kept proving was that MS was supplying the hell out of it making sure if people wanted it, it was there for them.

God for MS will be interesting to see what happens in January for both.

PS4 is supply constrained but not at Wii-levels, I think we will see this trend of Xbox1 outdoing PS4 numbers for quite a while.
I don't know for Dec if was pretty much Wii levels of rarity and looks to have more than the Wii did it's first Dec.

I'm sure PS4 is dominating in most EU regions, this is an NPD thread though...

True. Microsoft won the battle(December) but Sony is still winning the war.
With Sony launching in Japan in February I wouldn't be surprised to see these stock issues continue though...
lol?

You realize Europe bought more PS3s than NA?

Why wouldn't they make sure to have ample supply for one of their biggest markets? You aren't making a lick of sense.

Not only that, but the PS4 is still the best selling next-gen console in NA.

What exactly are you going on about?

Well, like Media Create, even if the Wii U manages to eke out a small win, it's likely that sales will undergo yet another catastrophic dive.

Next month's and the following month's NPD are going to be much more telling about how this generation is going to go, I believe.
