Netflix reinstates worker who spoke out against Dave Chappelle

You understand he wasn’t all that wealthy when he walked away from that $50 million, right? Because it doesn’t seem like you do. And when he walked away from the money, there was literally no way to know whether he would get another shot at a deal like that again. He just as easily could’ve faded into obscurity. So, yeah, he wasn’t a bum when he left all that money on the table, but he also wasn’t in the position he is today. He also basically fell off the map for several years afterwards. What you are saying is essentially revisionist history.

What's wealthy in your books? 1 million, 2 million, 10 million, perhaps more?

They didn't offer him that level of money if he wasn't already a multi-millionaire by that stage. He could afford to turn the offer down and still be live comfortably and did. Then came back and made even more with Netflix when he wanted to.

He could afford to do that by the time the offer was presented to him. I tried to find his net worth at the time but tough to get an exact figure. Did get this link right now but not sure if it's a reliable source and only mentions finances after he returned;

He wasn't poor is my point. A poor man doesn't walk away from that amount of money. He could take the hit and still live a fine life.

Of course he wasn’t poor. He also wasn’t set for life. $50 million was WAY more than he has ever made before. Plus he worked in show business. There was a decent chance he was burning all his bridges by doing what he did. So he took is very significant risk both in terms of his career and his finance. That is the point you seem to be purposefully ignoring to make some dumb argument about how a homeless person wouldn’t be able to turn down $50 million. Do you think that’s a profound point? Or do you understand what I and others are getting at?

So I compared him to a homeless person now? What is it with yourself and the other guy making shit up and attributing it to my posts?

Go back and read my posts in order. Reflect on my point.

Hell he's mates with billionaires, have Kanye cut him a fat cheque and he can take another few years off. And yes I get your point about it being a risk to walk away from it, that's obvious. My point is that he could afford to take the risk.

Go on, read back over my posts again and if you reply don't attribute things I haven't posted to me, makes you look just as foolish as the other poster. And "others", is one other poster. One. (Is the loneliest number that'll you'll ever know.)

You compared him to a “poor man”. Sorry that I used to word homeless. Feel free to substitute “poor man” in there if it makes you feel better. Regardless, you still don’t seem to remember the early 2000s very well. Kanye wasn’t a billionaire then. He was just on the come up as a rapper. Maybe you’re very young, in which case you wouldn’t remember. If that is the case, you should probably be quiet since you have no clue what you’re talking about. I’m sure you won’t though.

Actor/Comedian Patton Oswalt posed with a picture with long-time friend Dave Chappelle and then wrote a massive apology for it and had someone take a photo of him writing the apology.

If I were Dave Chappelle, I'd never talk to him again. Throw a good friend under the bus because of a couple social media loons.

Imagine being so incredibly scared of being canceled by an anonymous online mob that you feel obligated to write a literal apology essay on how your entire life led to the moment you took a photo with someone you actually have the audacity to call a "friend".

What a fucking loser.

I don't get treated any different, though, I guess it is because I don't look or act like an asshat.

It's one of the most valid stereotypes that people with neon-colored hair are probably people to stay the hell away from. Because no matter what it seems their personality is gonna veer towards volatile and insufferable

What a fucking loser.

This planet is full of fucking pussies.

Too many people also don't understand that comedy is often offensive and will go after 'touchy' subjects.

I love offensive humor, doesn't mean I agree with the ideas, but, I will still laugh at it. How many times do sexist jokes about women come up? I still laugh and don't give a fuck, I don't take it personally, it's entertainment, I laugh and move on.

The fact that he felt he had to apologize for taking a picture with his friend, what a bitch, and also the fact that Patton even thought that anyone would give a shit about his existence enough to 'cancel' him in the first place is laughable on it's own.

Imagine being a successful standup comedian who cut their teeth and rose to prominence in the early 2000's, now profusely apologizing for the harmless jokes of some other grown-ass man.

I mean, does anyone here have a single friend with whom they agree with on things 100%?

Side note, the first time I saw Oswalt in person his opening bit involved how dating for him as a young adult was difficult in Hollywood because he looked like "a little lesbian".

I think the right approach to these hate mobs in this day and age is to ignore them. That being said, I think we, too, are too quick to jump on the outrage bandwagon. Yeah, it’s a bit dramatic, but reading the full statement, he doesn’t throw Chapelle under the bus, still calls him friend, and gives no indication that their friendship will change. I know I’ll probably get some hate for this, but I think some of you need to chill a little bit, and take the time to read exactly what he said.

Sure, but he still apologizes in the post with "And I'm sorry, truly sorry that I didn't consider my post would cause harm". So yea, he still tries to apologize to the mob in a very half-assed way. The point here is that he didn't need to apologize for anything because he literally did nothing wrong.

I agree. And like I said, the best thing to do would be to ignore it. But his statement is basically acknowledging the anger directed at him, while also saying that he refuses to lose anymore friends over disagreements and doesn’t think that mindset is healthy, and I commend him for that.

The worst thing about Oswalt’s apology is that he doesn’t mean it… he’s just worried about his bottom line being harmed by a horde of screaming trans activist maniacs. He’s not genuine about supporting their cause. None of them are. They’re just all terrified that they’ll get cancelled, and their earnings will dry up.

The devils trans greatest trick was convincing people they had power.

I don't believe that. Say what you want about the rest of the entertainment industry, but Oswalt is one of the few people out there that I believe to be genuine in his approaches. Or at least mostly genuine.

The guy is just honest and feeling to a fault. He doesn't wanna make anyone upset.

The sad thing is that I'm sure chappelle reached out and gave Patton real human comfort when his wife died, a physical tangible thing. But Patton will toss that away for screeching internet harpies who couldn't care less about you if they get no value from it.

And good grief, Pattons now married to merideth salenger! He gets no quarter from me if he's cuddling up to this every night!

Keep living in denial. Oswalt is as much of a self-serving cunt as the rest of the cunts that reside in the shitheap that is hollywood. They don't give two shits about any of this, they just want attention and not to be "cancelled".

Plus the only people offended at Dave Chapelle are mentally ill dipshits.

One should only feel sorry about offending someone if they tried to offend them. Society can’t have natural and normal human discourse if everyone cared about the sensitivities of every person on the planet. It just is untenable and doesn’t work that way.

Just live your life and be the best person you can who treats people well, and if someone takes issue with something you did or said along the way, don’t lose sleep over it. It’s no big deal.

The minute you go down that rabbit hole and care about stuff like that, there’s no going back. You won’t be able to truly be you and will spend more energy apologizing than just living life.

What these people need to do is stop apologizing and start saying things like "if you're upset , hurt, wounded or offended that I posted a picture of me and a lifelong friend, you have far bigger issues than whatever my friend might have said. I mean this sincerely, you should seek help, because it can't be easy being you if these things affect you so much. I'm not gonna stop seeing a friend because strangers want me to. I implore you, seek help. Go to therapy, I'm worried about you "

There. These people are ill, and need help. Don't fucking enable this shit.

Insinuating that Chapelle doesn't support the right for trans people to live their lives safely? Fuck outta here. You can dislike Chapelle's jokes or shots at the trans community but he has repeatedly made clear his feelings on both feminism and transgender issues.

I guarantee you the vast majority of real Trans people are just trying to live their lives like the rest of us and do not give a single shit about this stuff. What were seeing is the incredibly small minority who do, and the rest is a large number of always online, mostly white, virtue signaling morons who desperately want to be an “ally” and probably have real mental health issues from their social media addiction.

This situation is a microcosm of why people today feel they can't be friends with someone based on their views anymore. We see that a lot. Long-time friends not talking to someone again for some view. It's because a narrative has been adopted by many that certain things are truly evil. And that's only because cowards have bowed out of the public intellectual space and have allowed loony activists to completely take it over and control the narrative. And now that they have, there is a pervasive belief that if you do something as innocuous as making a joke, that you're evil. And on that basis, if you believe someone's evil, why would you be friends with them anymore? Why wouldn't you apologize for having a picture taken with them.

But the thing is... 99.99999% of the things people say are "evil" aren't. They've changed the definition of the word so they can be victims in perpetuity and always have the freedom to tear someone down they don't like, and they'll keep moving the goalposts on what classifies as "evil" so they can demonize anyone. And at some point the goalposts have moved into the comedy space. But any sane person knows what evil actually is. Evil is sexual assault, murder, racism. Beating a trans person up because of their identity. Not making a joke on a stage.

A sane person would apologize for posing for a picture smiling with Jim Jong Un. He's evil, and that's worth apologizing for. Not Dave fucking Chappelle. But that's what has happened when psychopaths have been allowed to control societal narratives and go undaunted for so long they've just become accepted as truth.

This is what just makes me crazy. This was a photo, and all they were doing was standing together as friends. There were no statements made or "inappropriate poses/costumes" or whatever. Just a comic standing next to a very popular comic. And yet that was for some reason cause to write an entire freaking essay on "I was wrong for taking a photo with my friend".

It's pure insanity.

Because Patton Oswalt is either a coward afraid of the mob, or he genuinely believes he did something bad. Disturbing either way. Perhaps the latter is more disturbing. The former as cowardly and misplaced as it is, if he's afraid his career would be harmed(it wouldn't) it's at least somewhat understandable. But the latter? If he has been brainwashed to the point where he believes Dave Chappelle, a friend, is so unredeemable that he needs to issue an essay apologizing for it, then we truly are beyond the pale.

Incredibly well said, perfectly sums up how I feel about the current state of things. I think the problems are twofold. You have the mainstream as well as many sectors of the alternative media dividing us because it is profitable. It reached the point of no return in the Trump era. And you have social media platforms, namely Twitter, giving incredibly fringe opinions a megaphone. There’s a symbiotic relationship between the two, as they feed each a steady stream of new things to be outraged about. Over time this kind of stuff has just become a regular part of our zeitgeist, and as you said, the bar of what’s considered evil or reprehensible has been changed in such a way that’s it’s almost laughable. But there’s an easy solution that we can do to fix this on the small scale. Don’t engage. Turn the news off. Get off social media. Have real interactions with real people. At the end of the day this is all noise and whether we choose to engage with it or not is up to us. Obviously it’s much more complex than that, but I’ve found some peace of mind in it.

Whilst I totally agree with everything you've, said this really only applies to people who live on Twitter or who have public personas and make a living via it, the vast vast majority of the planet could care less what's posted on Twitter unless you're specifically talking about those who love on social media

Holy shit, didn't know this, fucking amazing!

We are now at the point where people sack EVERYTHING around them, because out of the fear of being canceled by some fuckstick with pronouns in their bio and 1200 followers on twitter, who they never met, talked to or care for.

I'm not THAT into the comedyscene so I know what kind of standing Patton had there, but after this im pretty sure he sacked his entire socialcircle in the comedyworld. Unless this is some elaborate joke but i doubt it.
