It’s actually a really cool interview. They’re both. basically fucking with each other but Friedkin is still totally honest. Drive, or any other of Refns works aren’t Kubrick and aren’t even Friedkin. On a different cool level sure, but he’s right in saying that those movies basically will have no staying power for a long time if ever.

To live and die in L.A. is one of the most underrated films of the 80s. Everything about it is perfection. Great direction, great cinematography, great cast, great soundtrack, unexpectedly violent. One of my favourite movies of all time.

To stay on topic - I wish the Exorcist game came out in non-VR form. It looks pretty cool, but not cool enough for me to start thinking about picking up VR.

When I look at photos of Friedkin I can’t help but think of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace. Obviously, it’s a parody of many filmmakers and authors, but mostly Friedkin.

Anyway, To Live and Die in LA and Sorcerer are his best and the most effective portraits of his mean, nihilistic worldview. Watched Brink’s Job for the first time recently and it was a susprisingly fun movie.

Friedkin at his peak was a master filmmaker employing very unconventional techniques to his directing style, of which he was both praised and criticized for. I've seen some behind the scenes and read a few interviews with him, and he's very intelligent and meticulous, very much like Kubrick, but more sophisticated and less anal about stuff. He's candid and upfront and just don't seem to give a fuck other than his art. Ellen Burstyn was scarred for life by The Exorcist and Gene Hackman had a famous outburst on Friedkin where he called him all sorts of things, not realizing that Friedkin had baited him with some rude shit talking to get him angry and riled up, because that's the sorta desensitized unhinged attitude that Friedkin wanted out of Hackman for his portrayal of Popeye Doyle in French Connection. Absolute madman but his movies became legendary for it.
