Doesn't the RTX "5080" suspiciously look like our late RTX 4080 12GB that ended up being the 4070 Ti?

Seems like NVIDIA is trying to pull the same tactic, but they've wizened up this time, they won't have another real 5080.

Below are the rumored specs for the 5080 and 5090.

These are the specs for the RTX 4070 Ti aka 4080 12GB

DXS0rhT.png

Compared to the 4090 and 5090.

CUDA Cores: RTX 4070 Ti has 7680 (47%). The RTX 5080 has 10752 (49%)
Bandwidth: RTX 4070 Ti has 504 GB/s (50%). The RTX 5080 has 896 GB/s (50%)
Memory Bus: RTX 4070 Ti has 192-bit (50%). RTX 5080 has 256-bit (50%)
VRAM Capacity: RTX 4070 Ti has 12GB (50%). RTX 5080 has 16GB (50%)

Rumor is that this 5080 will perform 10% better than the 4090. If such is the case, then that 5090 could be well over 50% faster than the 4090, making the gap between it and the 5080 even larger than the one between the 4090 and 4080. This gives NVIDIA enough space to slot in a 5080 Super, 5080 Ti, and 5080 Ti Super between them and price them accordingly.

Of course, we are also missing the clocks. For all we know, the 5080 could be clocked much higher, resulting in a narrower performance gap than the specs would lead you to believe, but still, I'm wary of that one. Those specs seem low for an 80 class card compared to the flagship.

Mentioned this in the other thread... obvious that GB202 got a decent bump in specs at some point after they speced it out initially for AI workstation reasons. That didn't happen to any of the other chips.

That they chose this specific cut (if ends up being true) is interesting to say the least. The price will reflect that.

5080 being 10% faster than 4090 is a big stretch, btw.

Nvidia doing Nvidia things but worse than one thought.

They're more likely to rename it the 5080 and slap a $2000 sticker on it. Then charge $3000 for the real 5090 upgrade. (prices exaggerated for dramatic effect)

When they killed 4090 production it was clear they were doing their usual thing where they didn't want it eating into the 5080 sales. Question is will they try and keep a similar RRP. I suspect the fact that they made it much weaker than your usual 80 class card they will try to go lower on price or maybe just higher margins.

I'm trying to find a game in 2025-26 that would force my hand to upgrade from a 3080 Ti paired with ultrawide 1440p. After Wukong, I think I'm fine until a next generation of console comes.

If Nvidia fleeces again, they'll have another Ada, maybe a mighty beast, but doesn't sell.

If AMD somehow undercuts Nvidia in mid range, nice RT boost from their pipeline and they take hints from PSSR for a new FSR AI, they could win me back. Needs more than a $50 difference against nvidia mid range though.

We've been stuck on this amount of vRAM for what? 6 years? They couldn't use a different module to eek out 24 GB for the 5080? That's a jackass amount of vRAM for a thousand dollar card.
What are we going to use it for when gaming except to feel good about it?

I mean, I have a 4090 and I don't really know.. what does cyberpunk at 4k with raytracing use? 14GB..?

Is there anything, like new tech, coming in the near future that will utilize more vram? Anyone know?

I wouldn't mind a 5060 on the 4070TI level
~4060ti-3070, but still 8 gb

alot game is UE5, you need target to this. If 3080ti not enought, then upgrade. System requirements won't change much till PS6

Well I was holding out to see the 5 series line up to finally upgrade my 1080. I've been a x080 buyer every gen since the 2 series, aside from the last 3 because of scalping shit and then 4 series sticker shock. Looks like I'm going the FB marketplace route and probably on the budget side. The covid GPU drought purged my spec chasing urges tbh. 6750 maybe.

Probably the Super. There were rumors that nVidia was testing a 5080 model with 3 GB chips but it appears they are just testing and not something that will be available at launch.

Specs-wise it would have been a 70 class card if this was pascal/turing/ampere relative to the flagship but with double vram, everything but a 4090 and 4070 feels like theyve added a +10 with lovelace.
It'll probably be around 70% in gaming performance at higher clock speeds which will not be that far from 2080ti to 2080, but it'll look bad compared to a 3080.

I think this is the case, they learned to rebrand the shit card as the good card, rather than into the card it should be (70 class).

Hugely scummy by NVIDIA, you would think with all this AI money they would just keep pumping out solid generations of good cards at acceptable prices just to keep a positive consumer sentiment, instead they have to let the Business grad's squeeze consumers for everything when cost of living is so high.

If you were just looking for a holdover card you missed out on a 7700XT sale for $350 a few days ago, it also included a bundle with space marine 2. Really good price for that card and it's about twice as fast as your 1080.

Nvidia is never going to make the same mistake that they made with the 3000 series; making the 80 model as close in performance as the 90 model, AND at half the cost.

No... instead they'll make the 80 models with half the performance as the 90 models, and at 80% of the cost.

...and they know idiots will still buy it.

When technology improves, shouldn't prices come down? Why can't we get 4090's for 4060 prices yet?

Why are they being so coservative with the 5080 upgrade from 4080? I don't understand.

why would the prices come down when the market has shown that it will bear it? the only thing that stops this train is people not buying their gpus. Ain't gonna happen as the people with money (aka not you or me) are buying anything and everything.

It's still the same place in the stack - the full xx3 part. However, it's only a minor node upgrade at best between Ada and Blackwell. You do get some power savings but the density increase isn't much (and is probally being used up by more AI and then some).

5090 will be the actual thing that will come with improvements with the price of 2500 USD, and 5080 will be made from scraps to barely match 4090. This generation will not be a good one for the consumers.

I'm retarded?
Yep, you'd be pretty fucking dumb to buy one at launch when the 24GB TI/super version with better stuff will be out in a few months at almost the same price.

Am I scamming myself if I jump from a 4060Ti 8GB to a 5080 RTX 16GB?
My opinion as a 4080 owner. Do not buy the 16gb version if you are using it for 4K, try to wait for a 24gb version unless you plan to upgrade again next gen. You basically won’t have any headroom and for a product that will be likely $1000 plus that feels nvidia jerking consumers around again.

At some point they will get too expensive for the average buyer and that will hold up game development because people can’t afford gpu’s with cutting edge features. Low amount of VRAM will be the first real issue to arise.

Then nvidia’s sales to gamers will really tank because there will be no reason to buy new if there aren’t any games requiring it. Sort of a downward spiraling dog eating it’s own tail hehe.
