Dino Crisis Released 25 Years Ago Today (July 1st)

I know the mod community deserves all the praise for their commitment and free updates to all they do, but sometimes I wonder, after all the effort they put into this patches/mods if they can just go the extra mile and improve their "Getting Started" guides. Whenever I go into any of their websites is always a cluster of terms and words that sometimes make only sense to them and not to the regular player. Example: https://classicrebirth.com/index.php/dino-crisis-classic-rebirth/

WHAT’S CLASSIC REBIRTH?

Classic REbirth is a set of patches for CAPCOM’s Survival Horror PC ports, currently supporting Resident Evil 1-2-3 and Dino Crisis 1-2. This patch is specifically aimed at the Japanese SourceNext release: it won’t work with the MediaKite release (the two executables are virtually identical and yet very different for some reason), but if you have the install data from any Japanese version you can use the SourceNext patch provided in the download section to make it compatible with Classic REbirth.

Japanese SourceNext release - What is this?
it won’t work with the MediaKite release - What is this?

Not to mention what would you even need to download (and install?) from the download links provided. Maybe this is not the best example but I see this everywhere on the mod websites.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

The wording is a bit vague, I agree. But I guess the understanding is that people using this Classic Rebirth mod are familiar with the previous ones for the RE games.

I'll try my best to answer these for you.

Mediakite and Sourcenext are small Japanese only distributors / porters who handled the RE / Biohazard / Dino Crisis (and other) ports in Japan.

Mediakite is basically the original PC release of the game.

SourceNext re-released the games in the mid 2000's to make them more compatible with modern OS. It's like Good old Games re-releasing older PC games to be compatible with newer computers.

This, Dino Crisis patch, specifically only works with the Sourcenext re-release. You will need to acquire a copy of that yourself.

In this specific example, the only thing you *need* is the .dll file that goes in the same folder as your games main executable. After that, whenever you launch the game, it will open to a config menu before booting where you can change resolutions and other settings to be more compatible with modern PC's.

There are other optional packs like higher quality movie and audio files, and the steps on where those are copy pasted are in the readme files within those packages, fairly straight forward stuff.

Would be so damn cool they gave it the RE Remakes-treatment. I only played the original waay later. Crazy to think that I missed out on such an iconic dinosaur game at the time being, I assume my 8 year old self just started to distance himself from the subject due to the fear of being called nerdy.
What a fucking coward.

I skipped Dino Crisis back in the day. I just vaguely remember thinking it looked kinda dumb.

I don't think I missed out on much.
The original I dislike strongly (inventory system is a nightmare, weapons suck, progression is convoluted), but the gameplay in the second game puts a lot of PS2 action games to shame and never overstays its welcome. You should take a look at some gameplay footage to decide whether it interests you.

The game deserves a remake. It’s been so long this series deserves some love again.

Good times, I might replay the whole series.

Crazy to think we only got 2 games from this.

I hope they remake 1 and make a 3rd game one day.

Not a fan, it's one of those games people my age elevate because we grew up with or enjoyed the games in the past. Like Twisted Metal or Parasite Eve for example. Developer thinks there's a big demand for the title because of a nostalgia fueled loudmouth minority and the sales end up disappointing.

DC would still be the better bet compared to Exoprimal (mega flop) and Kunitsu gami (it will most definitely flop hard).

Facts/sales show that Capcom has been riding this new found goodwill due to remakes exclusively (dmc5 and mohun excluded), most of their other newer IP's...they tend to flop - DD2 included which is being met with a lukewarm reception.

It is what it is, but, a new dino crisis remake in the vein of re2re/re3re/re4re would sell well imo

I wonder what will happen with Capcom when the remake fountain runs dry.

My parents were strict about what games I could play. They were like nah to zombies but shooting dinosaurs was ok 🤷‍♂️

I mean, they always have MoHun and SF to fall back to AND they will continue to make RE sequels - those are the safe bets since they already have a fan base, plus, their "layout" is already established.

The problem lies in creating new IPs - how long ago was Pragmata unveiled ? besides the "sorry for the delay" dev messages we still don't know if it's indeed coming or if it's gonna be scrapped all together.
Also, remember deep down ? that never came to be...

Dead rising could be another franchise that's about to be rejuvenated/ receive either a sequel or a couple of remakes (the new DR deluxe remaster points towards that).

Shit man, Capcom has so many nice IPs that could work with but instead they choose the obvious, easy way.
What about a new Onimusha ? A new Viewtiful Joe ? A new Lost planet ? A new Maximo/proper, full 3D Ghost n goblins ? What about Gargoyle's quest ? How about revisiting (again) Bionic commando ? (the western developed PS360 reboot wasn't great).

Mother fuckers be sitting on a goldmine of franchises /IPs and yet...

Now available with PS+

Strangely, though, there’s no purchase option? Do these PS1 games usually become purchasable after a certain amount of time on PS+?

You will own nothing and you will be happy. I’ll continue to play the OG on PlayStation.

Dino Crisis -> RE on PS1. Anyone that says otherwise wasn’t around for it, also will hand out gold if people are banned in this thread for such disgusting commentary on a goat PS1 title.

Only available to PS+, no option to buy. Just like RE: Directors Cut on PSN.

A completely asinine decision.

I might do a run. This game is much better than classic RE, if i'm being honest. I beat it on PS1, and then also the PSN classic on PS3. Actually I beat both the JP and US versions.

Puzzles were harder (which is why the JP ver. is tougher to play than RE was), enemies were far tougher (but there is an easy mode that makes you much more powerful). You could suffer blood loss, which I think would attract enemies. They could jump over fences, and were generally more agile than RE enemies. A way to cheese them though was by using the laser grids. There were different outcomes depending on the choices you made, but both could lead to the best ending I think. The mixing of items to create ammo was introduced here, and you had to really conserve your ammo. I evaded a lot of enemies too, if I knew I wouldn't return.

RE3 felt better to play but DC was more advanced with its 3D backgrounds, puzzles and AI. Its probably one of the most impressive games I have played on PSX.

Dino Crisis has always been one of my favourites full stop. I believe PSM 100% independent actually chose this as their GOTY, a choice that I liked.

Just finished this last night wow what an underwhelming survival horror game. And for THIS game to be the only game Shinji Mikami Directed and Produced is wildly disappointing as a horror fan!

  • There are NO BOSS FIGHTS in the ENTIRE game! The last T-Rex is an on-rails segment where you let off 4 grenades and it's OVER
  • The SHORTEST FMV ending sequence in Survival Horror Capcom history (and I got perfect ending with all characters in helicopter)
  • Final lab section was unnecessarily complex with Section A littered with backtracking and stupid fetch quests to re-fingerpint ID cards to traverse other sections
  • The only good music was the "save room" where it's the perfect mixture of sci-fi and melodic horror I wish it played during the entirety of the game
  • Killing dinos was as not violent or gory as decapitating a zombie in RE. I wanted to see their damn dino heads blow off and see them twitching (pardon me that's my Primal Rage gore hound nerd talking).
Another gaffer recommended Dino Crisis 2 so I'll definitely check out down the line. And I'm hopeful for a modern remake from Capcom!

Really shitty of Capcom to not let us buy this. RE Director's Cut was the same but fortunately I got that for free since I bought it on PS3. Dino Crisis however, I didn't get on PS3 so now I have to sub instead to get access? Fuck that. I'm so sick and tired of this goddamn subscription service timeline we are in. Just let us have the option to buy instead! It's the same with Nintendo. Forcing us in to their shitty service by gatekeeping their classic library. No wonder people resort to emulation.

I think they do this on certain PS1 titles for the first few months and then finally make it available for purchase afterwards.
Doubt that is the case here. This will be Resident Evil Director's Cut all over again. Capcom hates my money.

Yeah, RE Director's Cut still can't be played outside of subscription...
I bought RE DC for PSP or PS3 (UK PS Store) and it gave me ‘free’ entitlement to the PS4/PS5 versions without PS+premium.

I wonder if this still works? It's still listed on the PS3 PSN store.

Yes, the only way to own it on modern consoles as if you have an existing PS3 license and are using the same account. There is no way to buy it otherwise and it is tied to the subscription service.

Duckstation looks like it has a lot of rendering issues. The sky seems to disappear to black often, a lot of the shading on the ground is missing and everything is too bright. Could be a misconfigured emulator.

The PS5 version is much more faithful to the look of the original release (I played through it a couple of months ago on PS1 hardware).

I played this recently and man, I WISH I liked it but thought it honestly wasn't very good.

I love these old survival horror games dearly, but this one, the puzzles are absurd at times, the ammo too scare while it breaks a cardinal sin of this genre, don't give me limited ammo and have enemies respawn so fast, this results in 99% of the time you have to just run away which gets old fast, plus, the environments are too repetitive and there's nothing to the story beyond the initial set up.

The graphics are really good for PS1, Regina is a cool character, the first third of the game is good but man, it wore out it's welcome fast for me and was a chore to finish.

Such BS. I thought this was Sony trying to push people towards PS+ but its just Capcom hating money (unless Sony made a deal with them to backdoor-in games that aren't purchaseable).

Been hoping to own this game for so long ...don't have a gaming PC

This needs a remake badly lol
