Death Stranding IP Now Belongs To Kojima Productions

What?

It's been available to play in ultrawide since it's original PC release back in 2020.

I've owned the game since launch bro.

Paid for the directors cut upgrade on ps5. It's in my pile of shame. I never bought the pc version. Now I own em all.

I'll probably never play it lol

This is crazy, I saw the Xbox port thread first but now it all makes sense. I've been waiting on Death Stranding 2 to buy a PS5 but I will 100% skip that shit if it comes to Xbox. Absolutely insane turn of events, good for Kojima

LOL, like you're happier about that thought than the fact it's coming to your preferred platform.

I’m not surprised he owns the IP now. That was his mission when he started this whole thing after what happened with Konami. He’s been using his name and pedigree to round up funding for KojiPro games and for publishing purposes. It's already been offered on Gamepass PC in the past, another surprise release, and is available on iPhones.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
I'm confused, wasn't this IP always belonged to Kojima?

IP = Kojima
Console Publishing = Sony
PC Publishing = 505 Games

But now it looks like Kojima has taken full ownership of the IP, including publisher selection, hence 505 is now publishing it on console.

I have to say I was surprised to see a lot of posts saying that death stranding was a Sony IP. I never really looked into it but it seemed crazy to me that Kojima would set himself up for an another rug pull by doing IP that didn’t belong to him. I had always assumed that Sony has funded the game with long term exclusivity.

This makes way more sense.

Oh my god you've somehow pinned this all on Hulst, while the business side of the IP was negotiated by Andrew House, presumably including the typical 5-year window.

Just means MS and Sony are merging for next gen's Xstation line of 3do like licensed manufactured hardware.
You jest but I wouldn't be surprised from some of the stuff I've been hearing. But taking everything with a grain of salt.

Why is this bad news for some? It's not like Sony didn't get something out of this. I wonder what though.
It is for dumb fanboys who are starting to realize all big games will eventually be multi platform due to dev cost. It’s over the moment Sony does day and date console & pc release for all titles. Expecting all msft xbox games on ps/switch2.

Well great news for gamers in general. That being said its a bit of a head scratcher, sony is so heavily involved in funding and marketing, they gave the studio its best game engine to develop the game and they have no say in the IP....seems kojima played a blinder here and loopholed his way out of an agreement or something because I was expecting a bloodborne scenario.

Weren't Sony literally complaining recently that they don't have enough well known current IP? Now they are selling off one of their recent successful ones?
It was only well known because the hype around Kojima and Sony pushing it as such, if some other random Director at another studio would release it, it wouldn't have performed as it did, even though it wasn't a big game at the end sales wise

No amount of "Kojima the auteur" can't hide the fact that DS is a walking simulator, hope DS2 is less crazy exposition and walking and more action packed

What is interesting is the fact that they worked on port and stealth released it as soon as inked dried on Kojima taking ownership of the IP.

Most probably Sony don't want to continue with the IP after 2, so they sold it to kojima as maybe he wants to continue with it

If by "xbox" you mean PC, then yes it will be.
Meaning Xbox by "Xbox" too. Kojima Prod announcement to say they own the IP means exactly this.

FF on Xbox, DS on Xbox... Just need SH2 (that console exclusive on PS just 1 year) and I'm happy. I don't like any of the current PS 1st party IPs, on this gen.

Death Stranding? Well known IP?
“Well known” is subjective. But there are very very few new IPs that break through and succeed. It’s sold 16+ million units. For a new IP, that is a very significant number, and thus in that context is “well known”.

16 million+ isnt a big number?

I get the critiques of it, but for me it was probably the most memorable gaming experience I’ve had in a decade…probably helped by its contextual relevance to playing it a few months into lockdown during Covid where the entire world only functioned on the back of video calls and Amazon delivery men.
