Bandai Namco claims Dragon Ball: Sparkling Zero is their 3rd best-selling game ever (behind Elden Ring and Dark Souls 3)

  • Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero has already become the best-selling game in the series, in terms of lifetime US dollar sales.
  • An impressive launch has seen Sparking Zero become the second best-selling game in October, and the fourth-best-selling game for the whole of 2024.
  • It's also managed to become Bandai Namco's third best-selling game in its entire history, trailing only Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring.

Bandai Namco called the sales of the game "outstanding" earlier this month, but didn't give away any clues as to just how good they were. Well, now that October has been and gone, we have a better picture thanks to Circana video game industry analyst Matt Piscatella, who recently claimed on Bluesky that Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero managed to become the best-selling game in US lifetime dollar sales in the entire series in just a single month.

Amazing results, anything about this title that has it selling so much beyond prior Dragon Ball games or is it just the franchise is at its peak popularity?

The title used by "The Gamer" is misleading since Bandai Namco never claimed that "Sparkling Zero is their 3rd best-selling game ever (behind Elden Ring and Dark Souls 3)".

It was actually Mat Piscatella, representing Circana (NPD), who made that statement. This means it applies only to:
  1. The US market
  2. Dollar sales and not copies sold.
"Journalism" is really going down the drain. Here’s the relevant quote from my Circana thread last week:

Software

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was October’s best-selling video game, debuting as the #3 best-selling game of 2024 YTD. Over each title's first two weeks in market, full game dollar sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 were 23% higher than Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III a year ago. PlayStation platforms accounted for 82% of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 total console full game dollar sales volume during the October tracking period.

After just one month in market, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero became the best-selling Dragon Ball game in U.S. lifetime dollar sales and ranked 3rd among all Bandai Namco Entertainment published titles in history, trailing only Elden Ring and Dark Souls III.

Silent Hill 2 (2024) debuted as the #2 best-selling Silent Hill game in lifetime dollar sales, trailing only the original Silent Hill 2. It ranked 3rd among all video games in October full game dollar sales and at #28 for the 2024 year-to-date period.

So it's somewhere between 8-10 million already! Nice 👍

I'm basing that on Tekken 7 being at ~ 8 million last I checked (above 7, but maybe not quite 8 million), and the last DS3 number being a bit over 10 million. Tho, that DS3 number could be higher now, and the range for Sparking Zero could be bigger because of that.

A great celebration of DBZ doing Toriyama's legacy proud.

Oh.....

Welp then, the sales could be anything. But maybe at least 5 million right now considering they already did 3 million in a day.

Western games journalism is so trash....
