Atlyss on Steam Early Access

Atlyss, a new indie action RPG hits Steam Early Access. A proper indie, built on blood, sweat and frozen pizzas. Not one of the fakers with investor funding and several dozen employees.

Drawing inspiration from early 32bit console and PC games for its lowpoly visuals and it takes a lot of cues from Phantasy Star Online.
A fast paced Action RPG/ORPG where you can play solo or team up with friends via Steam's network API.

Developed by a single guy known as Kiseff, a polymath doing code, graphics and sound all by himself. It's been going through a bunch of iterations, started as a 2D platformer, went 3D and was meant to be a single player rogue-like. Kiseff also made some other small games including an action game called CHANGkaBANG! and the Tribes inspired CEEJ Tournament. Also showed some prototypes for other games on the Twitter account.
During development he kept a small dev blog on Itch and released public alpha versions and addtional information on the read-only Discord. There was also a Steam beta for Patreons which I never participated in.

The early Access game costs 9,99$ and includings two dungeons with about 10-12h'ish of content. But due to its grindy MMO-style nature, it's could be much more. You can create alts, upgrade your gear and get fashionable.

The setting is a world called Atlyss where they player's character is a dead soul called from what I imagine would be the "well of souls" to occupy a new body, via spell or ritual by Angela, a Mystic and one of the main NPC characters of the game. You get to chose from 5 different races based on rotund rabbits, imps, birds, kobolds and mice. They can be customized quite extensivly, various beaks, ears and tails. Some like the Imp can be changed into a makeshift human looking character, a greenskin Goblin or a dollar store Midna by making the skin black and adding orange hair. Get creative.

You begin as a novice and at level 10 you get to chose one of three classes. Fighter, Mystic & Bandit. There's no right race/class combo, as all racial skills you begin with can be learned via scrolls. Loot you have no use for can be vendored or stashed with the bank NPC and are shared across characters. It's all very forgiving and almost everything (except for race & class) can be changed by spending Crowns on books and special tokens used with a magic mirror and gear visuals can be changed with a transmogfication type system or dyed.

This is my personal GotY of 2024 and I wish the dev good luck. Hope it sells a few 100k!
I suspect we're going to see others copy the gameplay formula and mechanics in the future. It's that good.

I hope they add native controller support. Game has a great atmosphere and reminds me of Zelda dungeons and maybe Ys series combat(?) and I agree a lot of 2000's era Phantasy Star Online. Lots of different playstyles, abilities and mixed builds to use.
