(We haven't had an ArcadeGAF in a while, so even though this is a little old, why not share. Coming out in August, and already in test at Dave & Busters in Wayne, NJ.)

New basketball game from Raw Thrills and Play Mechanix, in the vein of NBA Jam and NBA Showtime.

After a three-decade wait, the NBA has made a triumphant return to the arcade. In partnership with the National Basketball Association and the National Basketball Players Association, Raw Thrills and Play Mechanix are ecstatic to introduce NBA SUPERSTARS – a high-flying, backboard-shattering three-versus-three basketball blockbuster!

From all-time legends LeBron James and Stephen Curry to popular phenomenons Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo, NBA Superstars features an unprecedented 120 NBA players across all 30 NBA teams, including iconic franchises such as the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls. In NBA Superstars, players take the court with their favorite team and Superstar to dominate their opponent through a combination of mind-blowing dunks, electrifying three-pointers and jaw-dropping defense, fired up by the bombastic voice of NBA Jam, Tim Kitzrow. The competitive, explosive gameplay is enhanced by the ability to create online player accounts to track game results and statistics. A fully-animated LED stadium scoreboard crowns the epic NBA Superstars cabinet, which dazzles with a breathtaking 75-inch screen, camera flash-simulating marquee lights, team color-coordinated RGB LEDs and four player positions.

Are you ready to become a Superstar?

I think the lack of interest is due to it being in arcades right now.

Well... watch the trailer, I don't know that it's in great demand to fix that lack of interest? (Looks okay'ish, but as far as I can see it doesn't have a new spark to it, especially 3 decades after Showtime. On the other hand, I believe this is the first Jam-type game in HD/widescreen.)

But check it out anyway if you're interested.

(*Also, there's some social posts out there already asking Raw Thrills for a home version, and they have done a few home games later on in the run. But they're mostly an arcade company, and also they may have licensing rights to deal with the NBA since 2K has the home rights and NBA Playgrounds is their arcade spin-off franchise, if that ever gets a third game.)

I think this game looks mediocre and I hate the current nba. If they have this at a Dave and busters I will play it once.

Saw this a few weeks ago and it looks....not great. Run and Gun is still the best arcade bball game ever.
Never heard of that. I'll have to check it out.

Was always partial to One on One back in the day, that was a cracking game to play with my brother.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Raw Thrills + current NBA + modern game design = None of the things that made NBA Jam fun.

Nobody should kid themselves into thinking this'll be good.

What time is it?

I played it a bunch in Korea and then bought a four-player dual-monitor cabinet in the early 2000s. I had to get rid of it when I moved though.

It's five on a five and is surprisingly deep with the only bullshit being full court heaves had a really high percentage of going in if the team taking the attempt was trailing. No licenses either but the obviously modeled the fake teams after the cities, uniforms and players of the time. I love NBA Jam and Showtime, but those games are pretty shallow in comparison. Run and Gun 2 wasn't as good sadly and had a very odd art style.

This looks awesome. I’ll look for it locally when it releases. Hopefully it’s ported one day.

NBA Playgrounds is also good.

Oh, little note here: this game is 3-on-3, not 2-on-2 like Jam and Showtime. (I think some of the Acclaim license-greedy knockoffs had 3 on a team to differentiate them?) Makes sense in the widescreen format to have more players, although it also makes passing more complicated.

Was just in Dave and Buster's last week and saw this. Didn't end up trying it because other people were playing it, seemed popular but I'm pretty sure it was new because I don't remember seeing it last time.

The cabinet definitely draws the eye though, the screen is huge

Console port when?

An arcade B-Ball game can pretty much bank a good time (although maybe the NBA Playgrounds series didn't get enough love? for some reason arcade-style sports franchises just don't sell anymore.) With this game though, part of its attraction will be that bombastic cabinet. It lights up, it flashes, it makes all kinds of noise, it looks to synch with the gameplay (not only does it have notices pop up in time with the game as characters heat up, but if you watch one sequence there's lightning that flies up from the heat and catches the scoreboard, and I bet some of that reverberates through the LEDs on the cab.) It's an all-encompassing stimulation that you can only get from a dedicated machine for a specific experience; it's one of the great things about arcades, and it's one good reason to get on out and support arcades with your quarters even if a lot of the games themselves could easily be sold to play at home

The founder of Raw Thrills is one of the all-time greatest videogame designers, so I think this spiritual successor to NBA Jam is in good hands.

It also just occurred to me that the reason why EA dropped NBA Jam was that their league & player licenses expired. Heaven only knows how expensive that is these days.

Look pretty decent, would need a few more modes if it ever gets a home port.

NBA Playgrounds was ok and filled the gap for NBA Arcade basketball (but the shooting mechanics where kinda odd, and unlocking all of the characters could be quite time consuming)

This looks closer to NBA Show time than something like NBA Street.

I guess they’re a small studio and Eugene Jarvis is a bit of a stubborn guy (to put it nicely) but I wish they ported that Cruisn game they made to PS4. It was supposedly great but needs better hardware than switch.

NBA Showtime on Dreamcast is supremely uawesome. Player models are a bit blocky, but that was the Midway look at the time.
