As the spookiest season of the year creeps in, it's time to raise from the dead our annual 31 Days of Horror Movie Marathon!
We post this thread in anticipation of October so participants can begin drafting lists, discussing years past, and drawing up the hype - remember it's best to not begin your movie viewing until October 1st.


What is 31 Days of Horror?

It's a daily horror movie marathon that culminates in Halloween!
Participants watch, discuss, and review as many horror, thriller, classic, goreporn, zombie, psychobiddy, monster, slasher, anthology, found footage, etc. or Halloween-esque movies as they can get through during October. The goal is to watch a movie/day finishing up on October 31st. It can be difficult for everyone to find the time for 31 films, but don't let that dissuade, people participate if they watch zero to 62. Just have fun and chat about your passion for on-screen horror!


Rules:

- Starting October 1st, watch as many full-length horror movies as you can until November 1st. Only discuss movies watched during this period.
- After each viewing, you must post which movie(s) you've watched and your thoughts/opinions on them. Be as brief or as detailed in your review as you'd like, but don't just list what you've watched - none wants to read a list. Please number your movies and keep a running tally of your progress. If you are cross posting your reviews elsewhere, do not only provide a link to the offsite review, post the full review here as well.
- Short films may be included, but should be 45 minutes in length or longer.
- TV series (The Walking Dead, American Horror Story, Stranger Things, etc) are okay to watch, but the catch is that you may only review and count an entire season towards your list.
- TV series consisting of stand alone short films (such as Masters of Horror) are allowed as long as they meet the 45 minutes or longer time requirement for short films.
- SPOILER TAG. SPOILER TAG. SPOILER TAG. Remember, many eyes read through this thread for suggestions, so try not to ruin anything for others, regardless of how long ago the film came out.
- Don't cheat. Jason will know.


Optional Extras:

- Do 1 movie every day, so you end up with a 31 films as your final total. As before, the full 31 films total is fully optional. Only attempt this if you have a lot of free time and/or are completely insane and self-abusive.
- As the purpose of this is to expose yourself to new horror films, attempt to watch as many movies you haven't seen as possible. This makes going for the full 31 movies a lot more interesting than slogging though the same movies every year.
- Adding poster images, screenshots, quotes, trailer links, etc to your opinion posts are not mandatory, but will help bring attention to your reviews of each film - especially useful if you feel it's a film worth recommending to other participants.

I quite liked The Autopsy of Jane Doe. It has some tense moments which I thought were handled quite well. I’d recommend that for anyone who hasn’t seen it.

Both my girlfriend and me really love horror movies, but that also means we often watch some real rubbish. My jam is 80s body horror. I hate it when horror movies give too much away, like Sinister did. And love a tense atmospheric build-up like The Witch has.

I don’t think I have the schedule to fit a movie a day but I’ll participate in the thread, offer some recommendations and also keep a check on what you are all watching. Hoping to find a few gems in here. Very open for any foreign language horror movie recommendations if anybody has some?

Yay my fav thread of the year, I was going to make it if nobody else had before Oct started. So thank you ThatStupidLion

I’ve seen so much horror that I had a hard time coming up with a plan for this year. So I decided I’m doing first time only viewings of random stuff I find on Netflix and Amazon Prime. There’s not much on Netflix I haven’t seen, so it’ll likely be mostly Prime Video. I expect some stinkers, but hopefully there will be some surprises in there.

Edit: If you want a gross out horror movie try Kuso on Shudder. I don’t know what I was thinking when I clicked play on that one last year.

Netflix has a ton of awful shit besides their originals during the peak month of horror film watching, I get why but it sucks. I have an Apple TV to get access to the stuff they have that isn't on Amazon or Vudu.

I like watching a bunch of the same stuff each year but always make room for a few new things.

Amazon Prime is absolutely fucking insane for old horror movies. Blue Underground, Vinegar Syndrome, Scream Factory, Code Red, and others put a ton if not all of their stuff on there. Never thought I'd see Splatter University, Death Spa, Evil Night, Disconnected and all that all available on one platform to stream legally.

Are we allowed to watch movies we've watched before? I assume so, because otherwise it'd be kind of suffering to find good horror movies or tolerable ones I haven't already seen. Been a while since I've watched my horror movie collection, a good couple of years or more.

Would also be amazing if people with VR could organize to watch a couple of ones together on Bigscreen or similar VR apps, could be awesome.

Oh yeah, absolutely. Most people specify if it’s a rewatch next to the title of the movie when posting their reviews. There is an optional challenge to try to watch as many new movies as possible.

AWESOME thanks for posting! I can add some of these to my list - I'm definitely including Castlevania season 2 - been anxiously awaiting news on that one.

9 freaking hours of internet downtime today, (due to some jackass at a construction site severing a major fiber cable and blacking out my entire region) at least gave me a head start on digging through my pile'o'shame.

Watched A Cure For Wellness and Curse Of Chucky both of which had been sat gathering dust for the last 18 months. Much to my surprise I liked them both quite a bit. Wellness is overlong, but pretty a damn good watch. I can see why some people had a problem with it as at heart its a really traditional gothic horror picture, and not the "Shutter Island" -style psychodrama it pretends to be. Which for me, was a refreshing surprise.

Cult was fun, in a guilty pleasure kinda way. I felt it rode the line between horror and comedy in a more sure-footed way than the previous couple of installments, so even if its not actually very good its solidly entertaining throughout and clearly Brad Dourif is having a ball as Chucky gets his best one-liners in years.

Watch Mandy. I cannot stress this enough. Watch Mandy. It's available in certain places online if your local cinemas aren't screening it, but if they are, go and watch Mandy.

While it's not on the list, one really underrated Netflix horror movie is The Void.

The film was very inspired by John Carpenter movies with some great practical effects. It's a mix of cthuhlu and cosmic horror, it's kind of like The Thing mixed with elements of Hellraiser 2.

Nice. I've been watching a lot of horror lately for a change, but mostly just needlessly gory stuff that's not actually scary. Whenever I look at stuff to watch on Amazon or Netflix there is sooooo much supernatural, zombie and plague related stuff that I'm just not interested in. Definitely more into slasher flicks, serial killers and whatever the hell you call traps/games like Saw.

Can't get a good list together for you at the moment, but, check out The Innkeepers. It's one of those slow burn horror movies, but its a haunted house (hotel) and the ghost part of it is great. One of my faves.

I think I'll give it a go actually. At the very least I want to get my money's worth out of this OLED's black levels

First film will be Alien (1979) because I reeaalllyyy liked Alien Isolation but have never seen the movies. Also I have it on Bluray already. In the last couple of weeks (which I know doesn't count) I've watched Hatchet, Wrong Turn 1/2 and probably some other dumb stuff. I might watch some legit spooky shit as well but I have enough trouble sleeping as it is.

I remember distinctly liking all of these movies when I was a kid, but now watching them again, they are fairly middling. Each of them is about a 6.5/10 for various reasons and I suspected they wouldn’t hold up well today, which is why I chose to watch them in pregame instead of during the real marathon.

Did you check out the Ritual (2017) that released on Netflix last year? It's a pretty solid flick with some unique stuff in it.

I'm a big fan of Oliver Reed and have been watching quite a few of this films in the last few months. I'd recommend Burnt Offerings as a decent horror film. I love the pacing of the older horror films and this has a good slow build-up and is a pretty underrated flick.



I probably wouldn't recommend watching the trailer and just watch it blind. But it's here for anyone's curiosity. I've been attempting to compile a list of films and organising something for October with a couple of friends. I was pretty stoked when one of them remarked that she hadn't seen any of the A Nightmare On Elm Street sequels. To which I said "we absolutely have to watch the gay one and, at the very least, the third film as well." The second Elm Street is a bit of a mess, but the homoerotic undertones and the underlying themes of the film more than make up for a messy, rushed script. The documentary 'Never Sleep Again' is beyond comprehensive and a pretty definitive and incredibly entertaining dissection of the series.

A psychological thriller very much in the same vein as the Psycho movies. I knew nothing about this movie going in and it was serviceable, I guess. 6/10

What Lies Within. Hubby takes his wife to a cabin to help her take her mind off a miscarriage. A movie you watch for the twist.

Spoiler

Standard affair with the husband getting more erratic at their getaway, accusing wife of infidelity. Then comes a twist that turns it on its head but is too ridiculous to believe. Interesting twist, but why they went about justifying it.

So I'm doing something different for this years 30 Days of Halloween, more Horror and Humor then straight horror. I did a costume and makeup test run this weekend and a modest attempt to emulate the late night hosts of my youth and of course the Crypt Keeper.
So everyday I'm gonna release these. I think it should fall in line with the "The OPTIONAL Challenges to Keep the Flesh Fresh" less a review and more a what to watch tonight kinda thing

I'm not sure I'm going to get anywhere close to 31 movies, but my GF and I committed to watching something every Thursday, possibly more. I'm subscribing to the thread to get ideas for decent movies that we haven't already seen. It's a real shit show out there with the lower budget stuff, but sometimes there's a gem that I actually like.

Yeah I've gone by glowing quotes on the dvd sleeve only to be disappointed, but now I'm feeling if there's say 3 quotes and they're all from places I've not heard of, probably not gonna be a great flick.

Not going to make the full (or even close to) 31, but already have some ideas to start on thanks to this thread and will be keeping tabs.

Just recently watched Hereditary...wow, that was something. It ended up moving in a different direction than I was expecting, really great. Had to think about a few scenes and how they tied together after, but very recommended if you haven't seen it yet and want a really good creep out.

#1 Sick Nurses (2007)

Better than I expected. Thai film about some nurses and a Doctor that sell corpses on the blackmarket. Then there is a crazy supernatural revenge story. Wastes no time getting into the action, quite stylish, gory, some creative and weird ideas with a good deal of wtf, the humour is pretty good. But it's also a bit tacky and campy and not scary, barely any plot. Worth a look but don't expect too much.

1. Terror Trap (2010)
When a car rams into yours deliberately in the middle of nowhere, and a creepy cop offers you a ride, don't leave your gun in your car. You should be responsible for your firearms anyway.

I've already forgotten what happened at the start of the film with a funeral or something. Making the main couple so unlikeable is pretty interesting... although Don is pretty funny. I did enjoy watching quite a few of the characters, but not the protagonists.

It was more of an action film with a horror veneer because they happened to kidnap a dude who was in the Marines or whatever.

I was waiting the whole film for them to make a bad call and get sliced up, but it didn't happen. I also don't know what happened to the six Ukranian girls... I don't think they were related to the plot.

2. The Thing (1982)
This is a sloooow start... oh yooo that's pretty gross. Poor doggos Meh, sweet forward roll but this isn't doing anything for me. Really like Escape from NY/LA as well.

3. Dead Body (2017)
Haha. They just did "it was you the whole time?!" as the opener... aaand I'm gonna' hate all these characters. And that'll be some foreshadowing with those night vision goggles, then. Just the kind of dumb film I'm looking for at midnight.

Forgot about most of the characters and which ones were alive towards the end of the film, but I did like the reveal of the killer's identity. I didn't like the back and forth of suspicion over whatever contrived scenario each character ended up in.

4. Trailer Park of Terror (2008) - mehh.
5. Rubber (2010) - Great film... although arguably not a horror film.
6. Self Storage (2013) - Obnoxious, annoying waste of time.
7. Party Night (2017) - This is going to be utter garbage... [confirmed]
8. Hatchet 2 (2010) - One thing I liked is that there's no attempt to justify people making bad decisions... they just get on with it cos everyone knows what's up. I feel like my time is being respected
9. Hatchet 3 (2013) - Solid opener... very different to the other two, but still fun.
10. The Purge: Election Year (2016)- I knew it would be about politics but it was.... reeeaalllyy about politics. I'd only seen the original Purge before this but it looks like they wanted to turn it into a story rather than... y'know... just purge some fools. They could have strung these films out for at least four iterations before jamming an overarching narrative into it about the illuminati or whatever.
11. Friend Request - I might have fallen asleep watching this. Update later.
12. The Collection (2012) - Had already seen this but I wanted to see the intro again and ended up watching all of it.
13. Leatherface (2017) - I actually quite liked this film. Got half the characters mixed up, though. First film in the series that I've seen
14. April Fool's Day (1986) - Nothing happens for an hour then people just end up dead and... oh.... oh these people are asshats. For some reason I want to watch this again.
15. I Spit on Your Grave (2010) - Taking an awful long time to get to the bit where these dudes what they deserve... ohh yo. Yoooo.

17. Truth or Dare (2017) - First half was actually pretty funny. Second half was fine I guess... but I did get tired of "do dare with [thing]" "what [thing]?!" [thing] appears spookily...
18. Beyond the Gates (2016) - unimaginably boring film. I remember absolutely nothing about it.
19. Hostel Part 3 (2011) - Butts everywhere! Disappointed that this one deviated so much from the others. Too much story.
20. Horror Story (2013) - Why was this film listed as horror on Netflix when it is clearly a comedy?
21. Saw III (2006) - Avoided watching this again for a while due to the twisty rack thing. It's as horrific as I remember.
22. Saw IV (2007) - Omg just stick something in one of the gears. The story in this franchise is so dumb and confusing.

I went in not expecting much, but I actually really enjoyed this movie and don’t want to say much about it to not spoil it. 8.5/10
